Your 1st visit: 1) A detailed history will be taken where the physiotherapist will ask you questions regarding your present condition, your medical history, medication and some general information (e.g. work circumstances). 2) Following this a physical examination will be carried out. You will be asked to perform certain movements so that the physiotherapist can identify any restrictions and assess if any action is painful. In addition any affected joints and/or soft tissues (e.g. ligaments and muscles) will be manually tested to determine their involvement. Depending on your condition (e.g. a disc injury) a neurological examination might be performed which can involve testing your reflexes, skin sensation and muscle power. It will be necessary for you to remove some items of clothing for the examination depending on your condition. It would be helpful if you could bring a pair of shorts in case we need to assess any lower limb conditions. Likewise a sleeveless top would be helpful for any neck or shoulder conditions. 3) After the examination the physiotherapist will discuss the nature of your condition and the various treatment options available to you. 4) The treatment options among other things include joint mobilisation, soft tissue mobilisation, massage, ultrasound, acupuncture and strapping. You will be provided with advice on how to manage your condition and in most circumstances you will be given an exercise programme. 5) Subsequent appointments are often needed and a follow up appointment will be scheduled at the end of the session.
